In Taraba State took a significant leap towards a sustainable future yesterday as Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas launched three groundbreaking initiatives under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project.
The ACReSAL Day celebration, held in the state capital, marked a major milestone in the state’s journey towards climate-resilient agriculture.
Governor Kefas, who welcomed dignitaries and stakeholders to the event, emphasized the state’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
At the heart of the celebration were three critical initiatives designed to empower Taraba farmers and promote climate-smart agriculture. The first two initiative involves the distribution of climate-smart farm inputs and tractors, which will enable farmers to enhance production and build resilience against climate change.
The third initiative focuses on the presentation of Community Resolving Funds (CRF) to dedicated farmers and community leaders. According to Governor Kefas, the CRF is more than just financial support; it represents the state’s steadfast belief in community-driven growth, which is at the core of the ACReSAL project.
The CRF is designed to foster economic empowerment, improve agricultural practices, and build a strong, resilient community that forms the bedrock of the state.
anticipation of World Environment Day, the Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with the Taraba ACReSAL team, embarked on a large-scale tree-planting exercise aimed at promoting environmental sustainability. The initiative, led by the Commissioner for the Ministry of Environment and the Vice-Chancellor of Taraba State University, highlighted the importance of collective action in combating the growing threats of climate change and deforestation. This symbolic event not only underscored the state’s commitment to environmental restoration but also served as a rallying call for individuals and institutions to take part in safeguarding the planet.
The tree-planting campaign, held on the Taraba State University campus, saw active participation from students, faculty, and community members. The Vice-Chancellor emphasized the critical role of academia in advancing environmental awareness and research, noting that universities are key players in fostering sustainability practices. Similarly, the Commissioner for the Ministry of Environment highlighted the initiative’s alignment with global goals to mitigate the effects of climate change and enhance biodiversity. The active involvement of Taraba ACReSAL underscored the importance of public-private partnerships in achieving long-term environmental objectives.
Taraba ACReSAL, known for its expertise in environmental restoration, provided technical support for the event, ensuring that the right tree species were planted in appropriate locations to maximize ecological impact. The team demonstrated techniques for planting and nurturing trees, ensuring their survival and growth in Taraba’s semi-arid climate. The initiative also emphasized the socioeconomic benefits of tree planting, such as reducing soil erosion, improving air quality, and providing future sources of income for local communities. The event set a precedent for collaborative efforts aimed at achieving a greener and more resilient Taraba State.
As the state gears up for World Environment Day, this tree-planting exercise serves as a reminder of the power of grassroots initiatives in addressing global environmental challenges. The event showcased how leadership, education, and community involvement can work together to inspire meaningful action. Looking ahead, the Ministry of Environment, Taraba State University, and the ACReSAL team aim to replicate this effort across other parts of the state, ensuring that tree planting becomes a continuous and widespread effort. By prioritizing environmental conservation, Taraba State is setting an example for others to follow in creating a sustainable future.
Governor Kefas expressed his gratitude to the World Bank and the Federal Project Management team for their dedication, expertise, and robust support. He reiterated the state’s vision for a future where sustainable agriculture fuels economic growth, every farmer has the opportunity to prosper, and innovative practices become the norm.
Dr. Joy Iganya Agene, Task Team Leader of the ACReSAL project and Senior Environmental Specialist, expressed her delight at the significant progress made by Taraba State in the ACReSAL project. This progress has propelled the state to stage two of project implementation.
She emphasized that ACReSAL is a crucial initiative in the fight against climate change, particularly in Taraba State, which boasts the third-largest landscape in Nigeria. The state’s vast natural resources, often referred to as “nature’s gift to the nation,” make it an ideal location for this project.
However, Dr. Agene noted that Taraba State is facing numerous climate change-related shocks, including land degradation, water scarcity, and reduced soil productivity.
“These shocks are degrading our land, drying up our water bodies, and raising concerns about water scarcity,” she said. “But there’s good news – ACReSAL is here to address these challenges.”
She urged beneficiaries to utilize the proceeds from the Community Revolving Funds (CRF) disbursement for climate-smart activities. Dr. Agene also encouraged communities to harness their abundant natural resources to combat the challenges posed by climate change.
In his remarks, Abdulhamid Umar, National Project Coordinator of the ACReSAL Project, emphasized the alignment of ACReSAL’s mandates with the Taraba State Government’s initiative to provide a green environment.
He noted that ACReSAL is a community-based project aimed at empowering and revolutionizing local communities.
The ACReSAL team is in Taraba to support His Excellency to unveil the community revolving fund scheme that is community-focused, as well as climate-smart agricultural inputs and tractors. These efforts aim to enhance food security and promote a sustainable environment. He appealed for sustainability and resilience at the community and household levels for the sustainability of the environment.
In a goodwill message, His Royal Highness Manu Ishaku Ada Ali, the Aku-Uka of Wukari and Chairman of the Taraba State Council of Chiefs, emphasized the importance of protecting the environment. He described the environment as a precious gift from nature that requires our utmost care and attention.
According to His Royal Highness, the state government is taking proactive steps to address environmental issues, with the ACReSAL Project being a key initiative. He highlighted the project’s positive impact on the state and its potential to provide alternative solutions to mitigate the effects of global warming.
His Royal Highness urged the Governor to strengthen collaboration with ACReSAL, stressing the need for collective action to preserve the state’s forests. As Taraba State deepens its collaboration with the World Bank, Governor Kefas urged stakeholders to harness the momentum of the ACReSAL project.
“Together, we can build a future where children inherit a landscape of opportunity, productivity, and environmental stewardship, he said”.
With the ACReSAL project already making waves in the state, Governor Kefas’ commitment to sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship has sent a strong message: Taraba State is ready to take its rightful place as a leader in climate-resilient agriculture.
ACReSAL…greening the environment,saving lives.
